Fred Meyer engages its stores, employees and customers in the fight against hunger at every level. Donations of food, funds, time, event sponsorship and relationships are a tremendous source of support for OFB’s mission.
“Our long-term partnership with Fred Meyer has made a major difference for hungry Oregonians,” says Sarah Schirmer, OFB’s corporate gifts developer. “From millions of pounds of fresh, nutritious food, to donations from customers that help fuel OFB’s statewide delivery trucks, Fred Meyer’s tireless support truly inspires all of us at OFB.”
Here are a few recent examples.
Fred Meyer funds fuel OFB’s fleet of trucks as they deliver food and pick up donations statewide. To recognize the gift, OFB painted a truck to advertise that it is fueled by Fred Meyer.
Fred Meyer was the lead sponsor of OFB’s fall gala, the Oregon Harvest Dinner. The event is OFB’s second largest fundraiser for hunger relief.
Fred Meyer funds helped OFB purchase refrigerators and freezers for partner agencies throughout the OFB Network to help expand capacity to distribute nutritious, perishable foods.
Fred Meyer and QFC’s are founding partners in OFB’s Fresh Alliance program to recover and distribute perishable foods to hunger-relief agencies. Locally, Fred Meyer donated 7 million pounds of fresh food in 2012. Statewide, 100 percent of Fred Meyer stores participate in the program, resulting in more than 1,600,000 pounds of food last year.
Fred Meyer employees also play an integral role in supporting hunger relief. For example, grocery managers from three stores in the Portland metro area wanted to understand the food drive process from beginning to end. They held food drives in their stores, delivered the food to OFB and then volunteered to sort and box food drive donations at OFB’s headquarters.
From all of us at Oregon Food Bank, a huge thank you to Fred Meyer for all that you do … because no one should be hungry.
