State of Oregon employees once again went above and beyond in their efforts to raise food and funds for hungry Oregonians. The 2014 Governor’s State Employees Food Drive collected $755,895 and 92,388 pounds of food. That’s the equivalent of over two million meals.
The food drive is a long time tradition for state employees. It was started by Governor Vic Atiyeh in 1982 to show that true Oregonians do what they can to help their friends and neighbors in need. Since then the food drive has lasted through republican and democratic administrations because food is a basic human need and the fight against hunger knows no partisan boundaries.
Agencies around the state create their own fundraising activities. From bake sales and garage sales to a musical variety show and a chili feed, each group demonstrated an amazing amount of generosity. The food drive ran the entire month of February, but many departments start organizing months earlier.
