Oregon Food Bank has been fighting hunger in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., for more than 30 years. Here are just a few of our recent accomplishments.
Emergency food distribution
Last year, Oregon Food Bank distributed a 44.2-million pounds of food to hunger-relief agencies.
Last year, at OFB’s two Portland-area locations, volunteers donated 148,500 hours, the equivalent of 71 full time employees.
Our work to advocate for public policies and programs that address hunger plays an important role in OFB’s ability to fulfill our mission. On April 18, food bankers from throughout the state visited more than 70 members and staff from the Oregon Legislature at the state capitol for Oregon Hunger Response Day, urging state lawmakers to make food a priority. Their efforts paid off. By the end of the legislative session in July 2013, the Legislature had made significant investments in food and nutrition programs, helping thousands of our neighbors in need throughout our region.
Nutrition and Garden Education
Our education programs continue to build important partnerships, with the goal of increasing self-reliance and improving the health of communities throughout our region. In FY 2012-13, our Learning Gardens team introduced a new Seed to Supper program and curriculum – a five-week basic budget
gardening series, created in partnership with Oregon State University Extension faculty and Master Gardener volunteers. We also extended the reach of our nutrition education program with our Cooking Matters® courses. More than 550 students participated in 48 courses in OFB’s Southeast Oregon, Metro and Washington County branches.
