Seed to Supper workshop schedule

Cooking from the Garden

Wednesdays 6 to 8 p.m.

  • Aug. 13, 20, 27
  • Sept. 10, 17, 24

Learn to cook simple, delicious meals with vegetables that can be grown in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon Food Bank's Nutrition Education and Learning Garden programs team up to offer free, cooking from the garden classes at OFB's northeast Portland location. Each class features a different dish and harvesting and cooking demonstrations. Income guidelines apply, see below. Registration is required.

 

Gardening in the Pacific Northwest: A workshop series for beginners

Tuesdays, Sept. 30 through Oct. 28, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Classes help beginning gardeners plan, plant and care for a vegetable garden. OFB encourages participants to attend the whole series, but each workshop is also designed to stand alone. Income guidelines apply, see below. Registration is required.

 

  • Creating healthy garden soil: Sept. 30, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
    Learn how crop rotation, composting, cover crops and organic fertilizers can help maintain soil fertility.
  • Planting: Oct. 7, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
    Learn direct seeding, transplanting and other common propagation methods that will help you plant a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs.
  •  Organic pest management: Oct. 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
    Learn natural ways to control pests in your garden.
  • Garden maintenance: Oct. 21, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
    Learn strategies for ongoing garden maintenance to ensure the success of your harvest.  
  •  Garden planning: Oct. 28, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
    Create a garden plan that will guide your planting and harvesting throughout spring, summer and fall.

Low-income groups or social service agencies can schedule workshops by contacting Starr Farris at 503-282-0555, Ext. 268 or sfarris@oregonfoodbank.org.

Seed to Supper volunteers needed

If you have gardening experience and would be willing to teach a gardening workshop in the Portland metro area, please visit the Eastside Learning Garden's volunteer opportunities page, download the forms under the Seed to Supper section and e-mail them to sfarris@oregonfoodbank.org.
