Celebrating National Coming Out Day

While June may be filled with LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations all across the globe in commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, there is another very important day to celebrate in October: National Coming Out Day.

October 11th is National Coming Out Day — a day to celebrate all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) folx across the nation. “Thirty-two years ago, on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, we first observed National Coming Out Day as a reminder that one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out… When people know someone who is LGBTQ+, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other.” (Human Rights Campaign) When we share our truths with the people we love and hold dear, we have the potential to create lasting change on how LGTBQ+ rights are viewed and legislation is passed.

Coming out can be scary, and there are very real ramifications to doing so – including (but not limited to) experiencing disproportionate rates of food insecurity. It takes immense bravery to share this part of ourselves when so many privileges are experienced by cisgender, heterosexual people the world over. It is also important to note that there are many who are unable to come out because it is unsafe to do so. We honor that experience, too, as we continue to work for change.

Whatever your truth, however you identify, Oregon Food Bank is here to ensure food is available whenever you need it. Because no one should be hungry.
