Discontinuing DACA will push many into hardship and hunger

September 7, 2017 – Attorney General Sessions announced a plan to end the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Discontinuing DACA means the end of deferred action from deportation and loss of eligibility to legally work for 11,000 young immigrants in Oregon, often referred to as “Dreamers.” Oregon Food Bank believes the dismantling of DACA will push many of these young adults into hardship and hunger.

Dreamers work, attend school and raise families. They pay taxes, give themselves to military service and bring a cultural richness to the United States of America. Dreamers by definition came to our country as children, and many dreamers have only known the U.S. as home. We know that there are Dreamers who are helpers in our food assistance system, volunteering and keeping hunger at bay for their neighbors. Without access to legal employment, many Dreamers and their families will find themselves waiting in line for food.

At Oregon Food Bank, we believe no one should be hungry. No one! We are committed to equity. We advocate against policy decisions that perpetuate hunger and poverty.

Dreamers, you have helped us fight hunger. We will now help keep hunger from your door.
