You can help Stamp Out Hunger

April 27, 2018 – Letter carriers work through rain, wind, snow and heat to make sure you get your mail. On Saturday, May 12, they will haul thousands of pounds of food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) started the nationwide drive 26 years ago in an effort to bring communities together to help food banks.

“Six days a week, our letter carriers are out in the community, traveling door to door. They see the subtle changes in income and know which house is struggling to put food on the table,” says Oregon Food Bank CEO Susannah Morgan. “We are proud to work together again this year to nourish and care for every neighbor.”

NALC Branch 82 President David Norton says it’s a long day but a gratifying one. Norton adds, “For 10 years I worked the event and my father would help pick up food on my route. I felt lucky to be able to work and spend the day with him.”

Last year’s event brought in one million pounds of food for Oregon and Clark County, Washington. The food stays in the community where it’s collected and helps pantries get through the summer months. This year the goal is 1.2 million pounds.

There’s still time to sign up for a volunteer shift. Volunteers will collect food along the route and box it up at the post office. You can also make a donation online or put food out by your mail box on May 12. More details are available at oregonfoodbank.com/NALC.

The food drive is made possible by your local letter carriers, the U.S. Postal Service, UFCW Local 555, AWS Elemental Technologies along with many volunteers and community organizations.
