My full name is Isabel Martinez but everyone calls me Isa. Right now I am employed by Metropolitan Family Service but I started as a volunteer about 5 years ago and I loved it, I love working with the community. They saw my work and a colleague asked me if I wanted to take her position and I applied and they gave me this opportunity. At first it was only a few hours but I said, that doesn’t matter, I will continue to do this. I love working with the community. 

The pandemic has affected us in that many people would like to volunteer but they can’t because we can’t have too many people, we can’t be too close. Sadly we have to tell them that during the pandemic we cannot accept a lot of volunteers. I think that has really had an impact because a lot of people want to volunteer, they want to break into new opportunities, maybe find work or just find more resources. Today they can still come get their food but they are left with the desire to help. 

I think needs have increased (since the pandemic started). Many people lost their jobs and we’ve seen that now instead of just a mother coming to pick up the food it’s the whole family. For me, personally, the school pantry has helped me a lot economically. Especially now with the pandemic. Our work hours have been reduced and sometimes it’s hard to make ends meet and pay rent so with what we can save from receiving food here we can complete our rent payment or pay our bills. It’s really very impactful. 

I think it’s important to have school pantries because that’s where our children are and we can distribute information about food banks. From there the information gets passed down to our neighbors, to our elderly, who also need a lot of help. That’s why I think it’s important to have distributions at school pantries and there is also a big Latino community that sometimes doesn’t know where to access help. 

I think we should be united in everything. Our entire community should be more united. For example, now with the pandemic it is more helpful than ever to be informed about resources. People don’t know, I’ve heard so many people say ‘oh I didn’t know, I didn’t even have rice or anything’ and ‘thank you for letting me know.’

For me, personally, I am satisfied seeing people receive their food. I am motivated because I love helping my community. I love helping them and I’m motivated by their gratitude. It feels good when someone says ‘Thank you. Thank you for everything you are doing for us because in addition to the work you do, you are putting yourself at risk.’

Mi nombre completo es Isabel Martinez, todos me conocen como Isa. Ahorita soy empleada de Metro Family pero empecé como voluntaria hace como 5 años y me encantó, me gusta mucho trabajar para la comunidad. Vieron cómo hacía mi trabajo, una compañera me dijo que si podía tomar su puesto y aplique y si me dieron la oportunidad. Me siento muy contenta. Fueron muy poquitas horas al principio pero yo dije no importa, aquí sigo y aquí estoy. Me encanta trabajar con la comunidad.

La pandemia nos ha afectado en que muchos quisieran ser voluntarios y no pueden porque no podemos estar mucha gente, no podemos estar muy cerca. Tristemente se les dice que durante la pandemia no podemos ser muchos voluntarios. Yo pienso que eso nos ha impactado mucho porque mucha gente quiere ser voluntario tanto como para abrirse caminos, conseguir trabajo o también por la ayuda que nos dan. Hoy pueden venir a agarrar su comida como siempre pero también tienen el deseo de ayudar y no pueden. 

Yo pienso que hay más necesidad (desde que empezó la pandemia). Mucha gente perdió su trabajo y hemos visto que si antes venía la mamá ahora viene toda la familia a agarrar la comida. A mi, en lo personal, me ha ayudado mucho recibir la despensa de las escuelas donde trabajo, económicamente. En especial ahorita, en la pandemia. A todo mundo nos bajaron horas y pues a veces no completamos para la renta y pues nos ahorramos lo de la despensa y ya completamos para la renta, los biles. Es impactante la verdad. 

Yo pienso que es importante (tener despensas) en las escuelas porque están nuestros hijos estudiando y ahí podemos darle la información de los bancos de comida. De ahí se puede pasar a nuestros vecinos, a nuestros abuelos que también requieren mucha atención. Para mi por eso es importante que en las escuelas sean las reparticiones y también hay mucha comunidad latina que a veces no sabemos dónde conseguir ayuda.

Yo pienso que en todo debemos estar unidos, en todo. Toda la comunidad debe estar más unida para muchas cosas. Como ahorita en la pandemia yo creo nos ayuda mucho a estar informados más que nada de donde podemos conseguir nuestras necesidades. Muchas veces no sabemos donde, muchas personas dicen ‘oh yo no sabía, yo no tenía ni arroz ni nada’ y ‘gracias por avisarme.’ 

A mi, en lo personal, me satisface ver a las personas que se van con su comida. Me motiva mucho porque a mi me encanta ayudar a la comunidad. Me encanta ayudarlas y a mi me motiva que se sientan agradecidos con lo que se está haciendo por ellos. SSiento bonito cuando se acercan y nos dicen ‘Gracias. Muchas gracias por todo lo que hacen porque aparte del trabajo que están haciendo ustedes se están arriesgando.’
