Legislative victories of 2018

December 24, 2018 – Thank you for advocating for people experiencing hunger in Oregon and Washington! Over the past year, you helped us achieve the following legislative victories:

  • Passed the 2018 farm bill in Congress with NO CUTS to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps) and increased funding for food banks across the country through The Emergency Food Assistance Program. We made phone calls, sent emails and delivered thousands of postcards to our congressional delegation – and our work together paid off!
  • Joined the coalition of organizations that submitted over 210,000 comments opposing harmful changes to the “public charge” rule, which would impact Oregon and Washington residents who are immigrants.
  • Helped pass ballot measures that supported those experiencing hunger in Oregon and defeated those that didn’t. Such measures included an investment of $651 million for affordable housing in the Portland-metro area and the blocking of a harmful measure that would have allowed Oregonians to be stopped, detained or interrogated because they were thought to be an undocumented immigrant.
  • Secured $300,000 for cold storage for food banks across Oregon! We also worked on the Document Recording Fee to help increase funding for affordable housing, prevent and end homelessness and create access to home ownership in Oregon.

We could not have done this work without your support throughout the year. We believe that it will take a community to end hunger, and we saw our community of advocates step up and take action in 2018.

Thank you again for your support. Enjoy the legislative victories of 2018, and let’s roll up our sleeves and get ready for 2019!
