From the Field: Tillamook Compassion Clinic
By Janet Orozco Ortiz, Oregon Food Bank Bilingual Community Organizer, Tillamook
At Oregon Food Bank, we know that we can't end hunger with food alone. I think of a recent visit to one of our network's food pantries, where I saw long lines of people waiting for food. The staff and volunteers there worked tirelessly to work with every person there, making sure everyone walked away with the groceries they needed. But lines don’t disappear once the food is handed out. Tomorrow, people will likely be there again, and the next day, too.
While food distribution remains a crucial part of our work, our focus on organizing and advocacy recognizes the need to address the root causes of hunger by improving housing, healthcare, jobs and more. Strengthening partnerships and building support across our region makes sure our approach to ending hunger makes sense for communities across the state.
As part of our organizing efforts, our team joined the Compassion Clinic in Tillamook, a truly inspiring community event. Compassion Tillamook operates a free health clinic with the support of various local organizations and churches and provides a wide range of services to those in need. Services like basic dental care, medical care, counseling, social services, vision care, haircuts, meals and childcare were available.
Fifty-three organizations from across the state gathered at Compassion Clinic to share resources and provide direct services to almost 200 community members. Oregon Food Bank Tillamook County Services contributed by distributing 32 blankets and 400 water bottles to attendees. Our leaders took this opportunity to connect with other local organizations to identify opportunities to expand access to food in the area and advocate for lasting change through Food for All Oregonians (SB 611).
SUPPORT FOOD FOR ALL OREGONIANS
Witnessing so many organizations coming together with a shared commitment to care for our neighbors was truly powerful. This event served as a reminder of how essential it is to build strong partnerships and continue supporting our communities!
