June 2023 Community Cultivator: Safeway Albertsons

Oregon Food Bank is proud to announce Safeway Albertsons as our June 2023 Community Cultivator!

“Safeway and Albertsons have worked with the Oregon Food Bank to end hunger for decades. We’re excited to be able to continue this strong relationship through our Nourishing Neighbors program. Our goal is to ensure that all of our neighbors including kids, seniors and families have access to nourishing food every day.” -Jill McGinnis, Director of Communications, Public Affairs & Government Relations, Safeway Albertsons Portland Division

Community Cultivators are engaged leaders and take strong action to advance equity and racial justice — and Safeway Albertsons’ commitment to fighting food insecurity is evident in their long-standing, multifaceted partnership with the Oregon Food Bank Network.

  • Every year through the Fresh Alliance Program, Safeway and Albertsons stores across Oregon and Clark County, Washington donate thousands of pounds of high quality groceries.
  • In March 2023 Safeway Albertsons customers donated more than $475,000 to the Oregon Food Bank Network through the KGW Great Food Drive campaign.
  • The Nourishing Neighbors Albertsons and Safeway Foundation granted Oregon Food Bank $14,000 to support breakfast for children in need this summer.
  • And between June 7 and July 4, Safeway and Albertsons stores are encouraging customers to Bag Summer Hunger by simply purchasing a $5 or $10 hunger bag full of pantry essentials. Please visit your local Safeway and Albertsons store to donate!

Additionally, Safeway recently partnered with Oregon Food Bank to pilot the Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program at the Lakeview store. Through this program, shoppers using their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) card can double their SNAP dollars by earning an additional $10 dollar for every $10 dollar spent on fruits and vegetables! Safeway and Oregon Food Bank hope to expand the program to more stores in Oregon, helping increase access to fresh, local and nourishing food at a time when the rising cost of food and housing is worsening food insecurity.

Safeway Albertsons is a values-aligned collaborator who shares our vision for communities that never go hungry. We greatly appreciate our continued partnership — and Safeway Albertsons’ commitment to ending hunger and its root causes
