Mudbone Grown invests in new generation of Black farmers

My name is Shantae Johnson and my husband, Art Shaver, and myself lead Mudbone Grown.

Our goal is to inspire the next generation of farmers fighting for justice for Black families. The COVID-19 pandemic only exasperated the deep inequality we as Black Oregonians have experienced for generations. From redlining, to criminal justice, to public health… Arthur and myself have worked to make a direct impact in our community.

That’s why we created Solidarity Love Shares for Black Families to provide 8 weeks of fresh vegetables and herbs to Black families who need it.

We’re able to feed up to 400 families for 8 weeks. Arthur and myself are also training and hiring another generation of Black farmers at $20 an hour. This is a step toward economic justice and prosperity for Black communities.

Oregon Food Bank and Mudbone Grown have partnered for the last four years in an effort to realize regenerative change in the Portland metro and surrounding areas. We share a deep commitment to food security for all Oregonians, and you can be part of our vision.
